One of the first things I do with my clients when coaching them is to help them get clear on their goals. You’re probably saying to yourself, “Of course, you have to be clear about what you want in order to reach your goals!” While it makes perfect sense, it’s not as easy as it sounds. If it was, we’d all be reaching our goals all of the time.
The dictionary defines clarity as “Freedom from indistinctness or ambiguity.”
That’s a great definition because an indistinct vision can only lead to ambiguous goal setting. Neither of which can lead to great success.
One of the main reasons we don’t get what we want is that we’re not clear on exactly what it is that we do want. We meander through life with some vague expectations of what we would like and an even more vague idea of how to get there.
Occasionally, a client will come to me with a clear vision of what they want and then we can proceed to set the goal or goals, map out a strategy and set the action steps necessary to achieve their goals. Most often though, clients come to me with a more fuzzy idea of what they want. Other times they have no idea at all.
CHARTING A PATH TO SUCCESS
My job as a coach is to drill down to the core of the client’s desires and what may be blocking them, dig deep into their interests and clarify what it is they really want for their life, career and relationships. Without clarity, there is no vision. Without a vision there is no goal. Without a goal, there can be no map and ultimately no way to achieve any level of success or satisfaction within the core areas of your life. That’s not to say that the path to success won’t need to change or morph a bit along the way, but if the goal is clear, the path will lead you there. Adjustments may need to be made, this is life after all, but with clear goals, your forward momentum will not waiver and you can make those adjustments with less hesitation and second guessing.
Take a moment and think back on goals that you did achieve in life and the ones you didn’t. What was the defining factor in the goals you did achieve? Most likely, those goals were clear in your mind and so you knew how to make them happen.
Making clear decisions about your life and career is not a passive act. We must take an active role if we are to achieve any goals at all.
Here are a few steps you can take to find the clarity you need to set and achieve your goals:
• Define your goals in great detail. Be clear!
• Make a timeline for achieving these goals.
• Commit to them in writing.
• Find someone who can hold you accountable, motivate you and support you in your goals.
